AI headshot apps promise a professional photo from a handful of selfies, in minutes, for a fraction of the cost of a shoot. It is a tempting offer, and for some people it is genuinely good enough. So is it worth paying a photographer at all?
I photograph corporate and LinkedIn headshots in Liverpool and actor headshots too, so I have a view, but I will try to be fair. Here is what AI headshots do well, where they fall down, and how to decide which is right for you, your team or your acting career.
The short version
- AI is quick and cheap, and can be fine as a stopgap for a profile picture.
- Likeness is the risk. A headshot that does not quite look like you costs trust when people meet you.
- Teams need consistency, which is easier with one photographer, one light and one backdrop.
- Actors need a real likeness. Spotlight asks for a natural, accurate photo of how you look now.
1. What AI headshots do well
Credit where it is due. AI headshot tools are fast, cheap and available at midnight. If you need a tidy profile picture today and your current one is a cropped holiday photo, an AI headshot can be a step up. They can also be handy for trying out ideas, such as a darker background or a different jacket, before you book a real shoot.
2. Where AI headshots fall down
Likeness
Small changes to your face, skin, teeth or hair add up. It looks like a version of you, not quite you.
Trust
People notice when the photo and the person on the video call do not match.
Details
Ears, glasses, collars and backgrounds can come out oddly, and one odd detail undoes the whole image.
Sameness
Many AI headshots share the same look, which makes it harder to stand out.
The other thing AI cannot do is direct you. A real session is a conversation. You get coached on your chin, shoulders and eyes until the expression looks like you on a good day, and that is where the best headshots come from.

3. Headshots for teams and companies
For a company website, the question is not only whether each photo looks good, but whether they look like a team. That means the same light, the same backdrop, the same framing and the same finish, even when people join months apart. With AI headshots, every person’s photo is generated separately, so matching them across a whole team is harder.
A team headshot day solves it in one visit. Everyone is photographed in the same setup at your office, and new starters can be matched later. My guide to team headshots at your office explains how the day runs.
4. Headshots for actors
For actors, likeness is everything. Spotlight’s own advice is that your photo should be natural and an accurate representation of how you look, and a recent head and shoulders shot. Casting directors compare your headshot with the person who walks into the room, and a photo that looks subtly different works against you.
A real session also gives you range: different looks, outfits and energies in one sitting, for commercial and theatrical casting. That is something a tool working from a few selfies cannot give you. My guide to Spotlight headshot requirements covers the technical side.

5. What about the cost?
AI headshots are cheaper, no question. But a professional headshot is used for years, across LinkedIn, your website, proposals, speaker pages and press. Spread over that time, the difference is small, and the difference in how you come across is not.
| Option | With me | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Individual corporate or LinkedIn session | £180 | Professionals, consultants, founders, speakers |
| Actor headshot session | £180, or £140 for students | Actors building or refreshing a Spotlight profile |
| Team and on location headshots | Quoted to the job | Company websites and matching team pages |
Team and on location work usually starts from around £500 and is quoted to the job, based on the number of people, the location and the time needed. My guide to what corporate headshots cost breaks it down.
6. So which should you use?
AI can be enough if
- You need a tidy profile picture today
- It is a placeholder until a proper shoot
- Nobody will compare it with you in person
Book a photographer if
- You meet clients, candidates or casting in person or on video
- You need a team to match
- You are an actor, speaker or public facing professional
- You want a photo you will use for years
Questions people ask
Are AI headshots good enough for LinkedIn?
They can work as a stopgap, but the risk is likeness. If your photo does not quite match you on a video call or in person, it can cost trust. A professional headshot looks like you on a good day, which is what a LinkedIn photo should do.
Can actors use AI headshots on Spotlight?
Spotlight’s advice is that your photo should be natural and an accurate representation of how you look now. Casting compares your headshot with you in the room, so a real, recent photograph is the safest choice.
Are AI headshots cheaper than a photographer?
Yes, usually. But a professional headshot is used for years across many places, so over that time the difference is small compared with the difference in how you come across.
Can AI headshots match a whole team?
It is harder, because each photo is generated separately. A team headshot day photographs everyone with the same light, backdrop and framing, so the whole team page matches.
How much is a professional headshot with you?
An individual corporate or LinkedIn session is £180, and an actor session is £180 or £140 for students. Team and on location work is quoted to the job, usually from around £500.
