Clothing Photos: Flat Lay vs Ghost Mannequin vs Model

On model and cut out on white: two of the three main ways to photograph clothing.

Clothing is one of the hardest products to sell online. People want to know how it fits, how it hangs, how the fabric moves and what it will look like on them. The style of photo you choose makes a big difference to all of that, and to how professional your shop looks.

I photograph fashion and products in Liverpool. Here is a clear comparison of flat lay, ghost mannequin and on model photography, and how to decide which your brand needs.

The short version

  • Flat lay: quickest and cheapest, great for social and accessories.
  • Ghost mannequin: shows shape and fit without a model, clean and consistent.
  • On model: best for fit, movement and brand feel, but costs more.
  • Most brands mix them: ghost or flat lay for listings, model shots for the story.
  • Consistency across your range matters more than any single style.

Flat lay

The garment is laid flat and shot from above, often styled with accessories. It is fast, affordable and brilliant for social media, kids’ clothing, accessories and outfit ideas. The downside is that it does not show shape or fit, and clothes can look flat, literally.

Ghost mannequin

The garment is photographed on a mannequin, then the mannequin is removed in editing, often combining a shot of the inside neckline or back. The result looks like the clothing is being worn by an invisible person. It shows the shape, drape and fit clearly while keeping a clean, consistent look across a whole range, which is why so many online retailers use it for main listing images.

Ghost mannequin gives you shape without a model. On model gives you a person to believe in.

On model

A real person wearing the clothes shows fit, movement and scale better than anything. It also carries your brand: the model’s attitude, the styling and the setting tell people who the brand is for. It takes more planning (models, hair and make up, styling, locations) and more budget, but it is usually the most persuasive.

Flat lay

Speed and cost: excellent. Shows fit: low. Best for social, accessories, kids’ wear.

Ghost mannequin

Speed and cost: good. Shows fit: medium to high. Best for listing images and big ranges.

On model

Speed and cost: higher. Shows fit: highest. Best for hero images, campaigns and social.

On model content carries the brand: styling, attitude and who it is for.

Which should you use?

  • Just starting out: flat lays or ghost mannequin for listings, plus a few on model shots for your home page and socials.
  • Growing range: ghost mannequin for consistency across hundreds of products, on model for key lines.
  • Brand led label: on model campaigns and lookbooks, with clean listing images underneath.

Marketplaces have their own rules, so check Amazon and Shopify requirements and Etsy product photos.

Prepare the clothes

Steam everything, remove tags and stickers, bring the right sizes (usually a sample size that fits the mannequin or model), and have pins and clips ready. Creases and lint that you do not notice in person look huge in a zoomed product photo. See how to prepare products for a photoshoot.

Add video

A few seconds of a model walking, turning or moving shows fabric and fit better than any still. Short clips work on product pages and as Reels. My product video ideas guide has more.

Questions clothing brands ask

What is ghost mannequin photography?

Clothing is photographed on a mannequin and the mannequin is removed in editing, so the garment looks worn by an invisible person, showing shape and fit clearly.

Is flat lay or ghost mannequin better for clothing?

Ghost mannequin shows shape and fit better and looks more consistent for listings. Flat lay is quicker and cheaper and works well for social media and accessories.

Do I need models for clothing photos?

Not for every image, but on model photos show fit and movement best and carry your brand. Many brands use them for hero images alongside ghost mannequin listings.

How should clothes be prepared for a product shoot?

Steam everything, remove tags and stickers, bring sample sizes that fit the mannequin or model, and have pins and clips ready.
